Sustainable Seafood Choices
Your seafood choices can have a big impact on the health of our waters worldwide. That’s why
GCRC is partnering with Shedd Aquarium to bring sustainable seafood options to Coalition members.
Each month Shedd highlights different sustainable seafood options exclusively for Coalition members. We encourage you to purchase Shedd’s picks, or other sustainable seafood, from purveyors that work directly with Shedd to raise awareness of this issue.
Also be sure to download one of Shedd’s seafood wallet cards to use as a general guide for sourcing.
Shedd's sustainable “Fish of the Month” for February is:
Domestic Mackerel.
Mackerel is a striking fish with a robust flavor – rich in oils, though not quite as pungent as sardines or herring.
The domestic Spanish mackerel fishery is a great example of sustainable fishery management in the United States. Mackerel grow quickly and mature in less than five years, making them fairly resilient to overfishing. That tendency, coupled with the fishery’s strict catch limits and minimum size requirements, keep domestic mackerel populations abundant.

What does it all really mean? Download our Glossary of Meat and Agricultural Terms (PDF) and also check out Animal Welfare Approved's The Grassfed Primer (PDF) to find out what we’re talking about. The purpose of these documents are to provide clear and factual definitions for terms most commonly associated with the production, marketing and labeling of animal proteins and other farmed products.
Food Labeling For Dummies
"Today, a bewildering range of terms and claims are used to promote and label the food we buy. While
some of these terms and claims have definitions that are controlled by government regulation, most are unregulated and are widely used by companies to attract buyers to their products. The problem is that the use of such unregulated terms can lead to potential misunderstandings – and misuse."
Animal Welfare Approved has produced Food Labeling for Dummies to provide clear and factual definitions for the most commonly used claims and terms for the production, marketing and labeling of meat, dairy, eggs and other farmed products"

Animal Welfare Approved is a market-based solution to growing consumer interest in how farm animals are raised and desire to know where their food is coming from and how it is produced. The fundamental goal of Animal Welfare Approved is to improve farm animal welfare. They achieve this by granting the use of the AWA logo to farms that are annually audited and found to comply with the most rigorous and progressive animal care requirements in the nation.
